Artist friends shared with me how the limitations of shelter-in-place led them to experiment outside their usual medium. Over the past four months of isolation and experimentation with sumi-e ink, black paint and oil stick I have discovered how a brushstroke of paint, a dash of sumi-e ink and abstract marks on paper can enter the mind and heart in ways that resonate authentically. Each painting is has a unique characteristic and energy. Some are more minimal and others the brushwork has an aliveness that looks as if it painted itself.
