The Sun Is Up, The Sky Is Blue

November 9, 2020

“The sun is up, the sky is blue;
It’s beautiful, and so are you.”
— John Lennon, Dear Prudence

Sunlight, water, ferric ammonium citrate, and potassium ferricyanide bring back some darkroom magic. Sheltering in place gave me the opportunity to experiment with new processes and materials, with exciting results.

This series combines photography and collage with cyanotype printing. The images have an ethereal quality, like sea creatures suspended in blue. Each day I made new prints, creating a calendar of sorts—marking the days with a new print added to the series.

The culmination of this series was a virtual exhibition of pandemic cyanotypes, installed in my Long Island City studio.
