No Man Ever Wetted Clay And Then Left It →

November 28, 2021 Donnelly Marks

No man ever wetted clay and then left it, as if there would be bricks by chance and fortune. - Plutarch

Art works don’t happen by chance. Showing up to the studio every day, looking, thinking, working with props and materials, artworks slowly take shape.

The studio shelves are full of found metal scraps, pieces of cardboard, fragment of wood and stone, some found over 25 years ago.

Some of these found pieces like the aggregate of rock with protruding stones, the shard of weathered, splintered wood and a crushed egg carton may not possess conventional beauty, their rough textures and weathered authenticity have a humanity I am drawn to and build into my work.
